Superintendent Search Process

On October 16, Superintendent David McVicker announced that he will retire from Central Kitsap Schools by December 31, 2019. The search is underway for a new superintendent. Here's our timeline:


Happening Now

Our school board recently narrowed its search and selected semi-finalist candidates. Soon they will finalize membership of an interview panel that will interview the candidates and provide input to the school board.This is an advisory role only; our school board will make the final decision. The board expects to announce its choice for our new superintendent by the end of March.

Process Overview

Choosing a new superintendent is one of the most important decisions a school board can make, and our board members are committed to finding the right person for the job! Here's the process they've followed so far:

The first step was to select a search consultant. The consultant conducted a nationwide search for candidates and is helping with the screening and interview process. To ensure the best candidate pool, the board opted to not release the names of applicants.

The next step was to determine the qualities we want in our next superintendent. This profile is central to the screening and interview process, so engaging our community and staff is vital. There were two ways for our staff, students, parents and community members to share their input: in person and online.

In-Person Input + Survey

The first opportunity was a public forum on Thursday, November 29, 6:30 p.m., at our Teaching & Learning Center. We shared more about our process and asked attendees about the criteria we should use to identify top candidates.

Next, we posted an online survey. The survey was available from December 3 through December 14. We asked for thoughts on how our school district is working, as well as any issues for superintendent candidates to consider.

"Ideal" Candidate Profile

We used this in-person and online input to develop a summary of an “ideal” candidate. The search consultant present these results during our board meeting on January 9, 2019. Later, our school board identified superintendent semi-finalists based on this profile.

Interview Panel

Next, the school board will finalize an interview panel that will include community members, staff, parents and students. Panel members will interview the semi-finalists and offer their feedback as the school board makes its decision. Applications to serve on this panel were open from February 5 through February 22. As a reminder, the school board will not release the names of the semi-finalists. Therefore, panel members must commit to full confidentiality.
