Superintendent's Update: October 23, 2019

Fall Conferences

Our schools will be hosting conferences over the next two (non-student) days. Studies show that when parents and teachers work together as a team, students do better in school. Fall conferences are the perfect time to get this partnership started.

Culturally Responsive Classroom Communities

We used last Monday, a non-student day, as an opportunity to provide equity training for many of our schools. Staff members spent the day exploring cultural competency in our schools and studying ways to build hope and resiliency in students. These trainings are part of a four-year required training series for all CK Schools staff

Great ShakeOut

Last Thursday, our district participated in the 2019 Great ShakeOut. We were joined at our Operations Service Center by representatives from Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue and the Department of Emergency Management. After the earthquake drill was complete, we reviewed what we experienced and discussed ways to improve our response plans

Center for Educational Effectiveness Survey

Our annual climate survey launched on Monday and will close on November 4. We are asking all students, families and staff to participate. This survey is important, because it helps us identify what schools are doing well and where we can improve. Results will be shared later this school year.

District Parent Engagement

We will host a District Parent and Family Engagement Night on Thursday, November 7, in the Agora at Olympic High School. This event is intended to bring families together for a fun night of engagement to help with the planning of activities and programs that promote their children’s development, learning and wellness. The evening will begin with a pizza dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by breakout discussions and share-out time (6:00-7:30 p.m.).

Save the Date: Celebration of Native American Culture

Please mark your calendars and join us as we celebrate Native American Heritage Month. This event, which is free and open to all, will be held on Thursday, November 14, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Central Kitsap Middle School. You’ll enjoy dinner, games and crafts while learning about the rich culture and history of Native people.

Staples Donation

On behalf of our students and staff, I’d like to thank Silverdale Staples® for its recent school supply drive. The Staples® team did a great job rallying behind the cause, and its customers responded generously to the local need. Our Transportation Department provided a school bus for the store’s “Block Party,” which made a great backdrop for the donation drive.
