Sketches are in for the design of Klahowya’s new gym, music room and classrooms.

“The architects really have done well at listening to how we operate as a school and seeing our students and staff use the space,” said Principal Jodie Woolf. The design reflects Klahowya’s warm and collaborative culture.

An addition will include new permanent classrooms to replace portables, an auxiliary gym and a band room. Students will also get an all-weather practice field.

The addition is on the north side of the building and will form a slight “U” around an airy courtyard entrance.

The school board will review the plans during a 5:30 p.m. study session Wednesday. Board members are scheduled to vote on the design at their June 22 meeting.

Approval will allow the project to move on to the next phase to refine designs.

“We’re making great progress,” said Doug Newell, executive director of business and operations. "The addition is on schedule and on budget."

Construction is expected to start by spring of 2017 and finish in 2018. It will be the first of four major construction projects made possible with community support of a bond measure.

“It’s going to improve student safety,” Woolf said. “Everybody is going to be inside the building instead of out in portables.”

The auxiliary gym will give sports teams more space to practice and let students go home earlier. Currently, teams stack practices one after another in the gym. Practice for some doesn't end until 9 p.m.

“I want to thank our community for supporting our school and giving us the opportunity to provide this for our students,” Woolf said.
