Three Central Kitsap High School students have earned the status of semifinalists for the prestigious National Merit Scholar Program.

Nicholas Dalton, Benjamin Huang and Luke Arnold were announced as semifinalists last week. Three students were also among the commended students, Lyndsey Richmond, Moira Riggs, and Samantha Miller.

They are among the top scorers of the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). About 1.6 million of their peers took the test last year, and only 16,000 qualified as semifinalists.

Semifinalists are now eligible to compete for 7,500 National Merit scholarships worth about $33 million.

Finalists will be named in February, and National Merit scholars are named in spring.

We're so very proud of these academically talented students!
