Student Records Privacy

Student records are protected by the federal Family Education Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) and other state and federal laws. We cannot release most school records without prior permission from a student or a student’s parent or guardian. Students can review their records and may request explanations of the contents.

Who Has Access

When a student becomes an eligible student, the rights according to and consent required of parents transfer from the parents to the student. "Eligible Student" means a student who has reached 18 years of age or is attending an institution of post-secondary education. Parents of a dependent student older than 18, as defined in the Internal Revenue Code, 26 USC§152, may also request records.

Requirements to Disclose Information

The parent or eligible student must provide a signed and dated written consent before an educational agency or institution discloses personally identifiable information from the student's education records, with some exceptions.

The written consent must:

  • Specify the records that may be disclosed
  • State the purpose of the disclosure
  • Identify the party or class of parties to whom the disclosure may be made
