Human Growth and Development Curriculum

We support parents and guardians as the primary educator for puberty and sexual education topics. Strong communication between children, their families, and trusted adults at school can help students feel safe and make healthy choices. That is why we want to work with your family on this important milestone in your student’s development.

School districts in Washington are required to present age-appropriate instruction about human growth and development and HIV prevention.

For grades K-8, we use the Second Steps curriculum to support social emotional learning. Starting in 5th grade, we use lessons taught by registered nurses and provide medically and scientifically factual information.

New State Law on Sexual Health Education

In 2020, Washington State Legislature approved changes to the sexual health curriculum. Because our current curriculum already meets the requirements of this law, our district will see no major changes. OSPI has created a list of Frequently Asked Questions about this new law. At the end of this page, you’ll find a list of CSHE topics by grade level and sequence.

Your Right to Opt-Out

We know you might have more questions.

Parents or guardians may opt their child out HIV/AIDS curriculum by first previewing the material, then filling out an opt-out form. If you would like to opt out, please contact your child’s principal.

Each year, 30-days prior to instruction, families will receive opt-out information.
