You don't have to be an artist to be an art docent!
Art docents are volunteers who teach art in our elementary classrooms. There are no set requirements or qualifications, just a willingness to learn and teach.
What is the Art Docent Program?
Our Art Docent Program provides an opportunity to introduce our students to the basic principles and elements of design, as well as a wide variety of art and artists in a relaxed and creative atmosphere. Volunteers provide an important service as they share learning experiences with students using works from various artists.
How long is a lesson, and what would I cover?
Lessons usually run about 45 minutes to an hour (depending on cleanup). Each lesson provides a chance to share a piece of art with students and explore one or two elements or principals of design. Then, you'll lead them through the process of creating great works of their own!
What is the role of the classroom teacher?
Teachers generally set aside time for an art docent lesson and help with classroom management. However, it is a good idea to ask your teacher directly about their expectations and the role they expect to play on the day of a lesson.
What is the curriculum?
We've developed several lessons for each grade. They each include a list of supplies and step-by-step instructions. You may also develop your own lesson(s) if desired.
What types of other resources are available?
Dozens of online resources are available for art docent volunteers. Here's a start:
