Central Kitsap School District is celebrating a big win for our elementary students! Our district has been awarded a $2 million, five-year grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) to help students excel in math.
This grant, known as the Elementary Math Project, is designed to help students in grades PK-5 increase their math knowledge, skills, and confidence. All of our elementary schools, many with high numbers of military-connected students, will benefit from this DoDEA funding.
The majority of the grant resources will be used to provide training and support for our teachers.
Improving the quality of math instruction will help make learning math more engaging and effective for every student.
“This grant is an incredible opportunity for us,” said Superintendent Dr. Erin Prince. “By investing in our teachers and making sure they have the best training and resources, we’re setting our students up for success in math and beyond.”
Over the next five years, this grant will fund a full-time math instructional coach who will work closely with teachers and an outside professional development partner focusing on improving mathematical understanding and achievement. In addition, this grant will support the development of our district and building leaders so that they can help ensure that all of our elementary students receive a strong and engaging math education.
The Elementary Math Project’s goal is to increase math achievement for all elementary students. Current assessment data reveals that not all elementary students in grades 3-5 are able to demonstrate grade-level proficiency in math. By implementing the strategies and activities included in this grant project, we expect to see improvements in this data by the spring of 2029.
“Our district is extremely grateful to DoDEA for this funding,” said Doug Dowell, the project director. “We are excited to get started on this important work and confident it will help to lay the foundation for future academic success and opportunities for our youngest students.”
