When Wesley was 7-years-old, his mother passed away unexpectedly from an undetected heart condition. Wesley recalls her being mid-laugh and around all of her family at their grandparents’ house when she collapsed and later passed away.
A self-described “mama’s boy,” Wesley says growing up without her was difficult for him and his three older siblings. But over time, they found inspiration in the way their mother lived her life. She taught them the importance of making the most of every opportunity. But ultimately they found peace knowing she was around the people she loved and doing the thing she loved most, laughing.
That mindset shaped Wesley’s experience at Olympic High School. Wesley pushed himself out of his comfort zone, joining sports he never thought he'd join, like wrestling, and activities he’d never thought he would participate in, like orchestra and jazz choir. Wesley also served as the captain of the boys’ cross country team for his junior and senior seasons.
Wesley knows life is short. That’s why he doesn’t take each day for granted and takes plenty of time to laugh. He knows that’s what his mom would have wanted.
